Alopecia (Hair Loss)

Alopecia is the loss of hair from the head or the body.  There are many different types of alopecia and different underlying causes.  Some of the more common causes include:

  • Autoimmune (alopecia areata, alopecia universalis, alopecia totalis  or Lupus)
  • Genetic (male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness)
  • Infections (fungal)
  • Medical conditions (thyroid disease)
  • Medical treatments (radiation or chemotherapy, some oral medications)
  • Nutritional (deficiency of iron, biotin, zinc – or excessive Vitamin A)
  • Traumatic (compulsive pulling –trichotilomania, or pulling hair back in tight braids –traction alopecia)

By taking a careful history and examining the affected areas of your body your doctor at Morristown Dermatology can help determine the cause of your hair loss.  If necessary a skin biopsy can be performed.  Alopecia can be difficult to treat and often depends on the underlying cause.  We can determine if there is a treatment appropriate for you.
